My son is also on year 4 of his PhD in MCD Bio and received an NIH grant to fund his research for 3 years in October 2024. All of that evaporated after the inauguration. His research explores the mechanism by which pregnancy decreases breast cancer risk. His research has been sacked because of the forbidden words “female” and “pregnant”. So much important research halted and so many individuals’ lives upended.

That is just awful. The fallout from this is not even possible to comprehend. We are all the poorer for it.

This maladministration sucks. They don’t care about anything but hoarding power and money for themselves.

Trump was apparently mercurial...aka prone to petulant, temper tantrums...and difficult to deal with and wanted a lot more money than the land was worth (it was appraised for $65 million to $90 million), and so the deal never went forward. Why...greed! He has no gift in the "art of a deal". The only deal Trump considers acceptable is when he wins or appears to have won...aka looks good.

Trump has basically blackmailed Columbia University under the guise of the institution's ineffective balance between opposing views of tragic events in the middle east...yes I am 'fence sitting' on what actions were appropriate or injustice.

Trump is unquestionably vindictive & this is yet another example of his deplorable behaviour. We can 🙏 that those of true compassion & wisdom will be victorious.

This will then demonstrate the true character of the vast majority of Americans who care about their neighbours & the global community the USA has supported for decades. JJF 🇨🇦

The short-fingered vulgarian knows he doesn't have to worry about fibroids. And, he's a sadist. Therefore....

Thank you for spotlighting this dynamic young scientist.

My maternal grandfather died from pancreatic cancer and my spouse's maternal grandfather is currently dying from it as well. This ridiculous grudge over not getting his way 25 years ago is killing people and will continue to do so.

It is a crime what is happening in the US right now, on every level. I hope this young researcher applies to a Canadian University to continue her work.

So, the question is what can we do about it? I have no idea. I emailed my congress man but he is a Republican in the red state of Texas, so all I got back was meaningless placating. And if you talk to any MAGA they think this is great because these scientists were enriching themselves on our tax dollars… it is really infuriating.

Is this who we are now as a human race?

That's the question I find I am asking myself more and more frequently these days.

Where is the hope?

Reliance on the few who have considerable means and a moral compass is unsustainable.

Is the US looking at a mass exodus of research scientists?

It's the disruption to the systems that support the research process that will do the most damage long term.

Is this who we are now?

This is heartbreaking! It's taken less than 10 weeks to completely f*ck up a nation's health system; from measles and bird flu being out of control and not carefully monitored/reported to innovative essential 'blue sky' research being trashed. A huge pox on the orange buffoon and his sycophants
