I’m interested to find out how women can mobilize to do something about all this. I mean in a practical way. I had a Zoom meeting with friends recently about this, and we talked about buying abortion pills to give to those who need them (we are all past child-bearing age). What organizations can we join to help join forces with others - I can’t stand feeling helpless and I’m of the generation that fought for Women’s rights.

Not much to add here, except to say that I almost can’t overstate how much I appreciate your perspective and the work you’re doing, Dr. Jen. Thank you

At least the current leader of the Liberal Party here is not allowing contraception or abortion rights into the hands of the elected officials. It seems Trump and his inner circle change their minds as quickly as a clean glass at the bar!!! I feel for every American woman. Male dominance in politics, health and families is still a significant issue. Maybe women need to do the marches again like what were done to get the vote!! I am sure Trump will figure out a way to suppress that as well as women's voices in all matters during his 4 year term. He selected a few women so far, but I think that is to keep some voters happy (maybe his wife). I am not certain if women can have a script filled in Canada if written by a US Dr. I know some medications can such as diabetes and thyroid. Some American's were coming here for diabetes medication before Biden/Harris got it added to a short list of medications covered by the government. Contraception and abortion pills are available here at no cost currently, but not HRT or vaginal estrogen products. Estradot is manufactured here for Canadian pharmacies only, but they are not keeping up with the demand.

Rx are only valid in Canada when issued by prescriber with a Canadian license. The data demonstrating various medication have significant potency past the manufacturer's stated expiry dates is not new information...noted in past issues of the Medical Letter.

Those working in health care are well aware of the "strange rationalization" the public employ when justifying their actions. I have been asked on many occasions, "yeah it says it's expired but really how long after is it good for" 🤔

When you discover expired milk in your refrigerator, do you decide it's ok to drink it?

Expired tetracycline (antibiotic) can damage your kidneys...Fanconi syndrome.

Expired epinephrine degrades quickly (oh the colour hasn't changed its ok...not), one should not rely upon an EpiPen pasts expiry date. I will tell someone in the case of the EpiPen use it & call 911.

The future for many American women requiring timely Ob/Gyn health services in the coming years has sadly become precarious with the election of Trump & his cast of syncophants ☹️

Women have travelled here already for ob/gyn care and pay out of pocket (OHIP is for residents). All health care in the US is going to be impacted once he takes over. Vaccines, medical research as well. I do know that a family was travelling here for diabetes medications perhaps they went to an ER for a script I do not know for sure.

Insulin does not require a prescription as such where I work (Sarnia Ontario short drive Michigan) there are a few Michigan residents that travel to buy their insulin.

Visiting a Canadian ER for a prescription is an expensive visit for a Rx to treat a chronic condition. There are a few local Dr who retain their Michigan license & see patients on both sides of the border. Those Dr's risk being sanctioned by their Ont licencing body if they simply co-sign a Michigan Rx ( most Phm would challenge such an Rx, so not to be subsequently changed if our College was to question a co-signed Rx ).

Most medications are available in both countries, however strength & formulation differ, e.g. inhalers not a common Ob/Gyn Rx are not available in the same units/spray.

There was a time when copper-bearing IUDs were not available in the US. The Cu-7 was withdrawn from the US market by the manufacterer for economic reasons (to be brief), but held the US patent on copper IUDs. Said patent had to run out before the Paragard could be sold here. I heard that travel agents were arranging trips to Canada that included opportunities to get an IUD as well.

Thinking about if Comstock is enforced. You recently wrote about limitations on transpiration of abortion medications and even instruments across federally regulated highways, mail and airways. What if like as seen in the cannabis industry manufacturing was done at the state level

In states that have codified abortion? Maybe Mark Cubans Cost Plus could

Expand full comment

I don't think that would work, because the pills are likely all made in one state (assuming they are made here).

Expand full comment

Yes I think right now they are primarily made in Nevada. But what if states where abortion was legal had their own manufacturer. It’s not an economic win but could saves lives.i know cost plus has their own facility in Texas to manufacture generic drugs. Let’s just hope we are not going to face this.

I don’t think that would ever happen. The ability to get a factory online to make these medications takes a lot of money and time. I doubt any company would invest in it. Just being realistic.

I’m continuing to think about the factory…cannabis pharmaceuticals including tablets and liquids are manufactured in many factories in any state with a medical cannabis program. Yes, there are problems with quality in the cannabis industry. However, Im merely interested here in the infrastructure that’s currently available at state levels for pharmaceutical manufacturing. If Comstock is enforced it would not technically, according to Rewire News, outlaw abortions but the supply chain of medications . Looking for answers regarding the legality of manufacturing at the state level. We have many talented pharmacists and scientists that could make it work if legal abortions are continued to be siloed by state, and not federally illegal. Hoping someone with resources and smarts can make this happen as needed.

How could Comstock even be enforced? Just asking vpbecause i feel it would be difficult…

It has always previously been considered unenforceable, but with a DOJ and Supreme Court that has a forced birth agenda that changes things.
