thank you for sharing this history and background from Canada and good luck with the election. I hope women in Canada vote for their rights and escape the fate of American women.
Thank you! I belong to a Facebook group called "Canadian Women and Allies: Project Never Poilievre." It's good to be in solidarity with other people who recognize how dangerous a Poilievre government would be for this country, but I fear there are not enough of us. A record number of people voted in the advanced polls Easter weekend. I hope it's a good sign, not a bad one.
I am a Canadian and this election is very important in many ways. Our previous Prime Minister Trudeau (Liberal Party) made some errors in judgement, but supported women's rights , free speech, the LBGQT+2 community, as well as the availability of birth control (now no prescription fee). The Conservative's have been very outspoken about changing the laws which protect women's rights to choose. I am hopeful that every woman was paying attention before she voted early and reviews the policy and "promises" that each party is presenting on election day. BC is free here and HRT is free in Manitoba I am hoping that HRT of any kind will be available in every province. We will never be the 51st state!
"There is now no Canadian abortion law per se, ". Exactly, and that's how it should be. It's a very private matter. I've already voted, and this just validates my choice.
Thanks, Jen, for pulling together the information on the history of Conservative bills and voting. I read the CPC policy about a year ago when it looked grim and that we would likely end up with a CPC government (fingers still crossed that they lose on Monday, of course), but I hadn't pieced together all the pieces that you did.
I've already voted and although I am in multi-decade Conservative stronghold, I figure every vote against them (NDP in my case) is still a better choice for women's health and safety.
Edit to add that if the CPC is so interested in protecting a child in the womb through multiple bills, why are they not so interested in introducing bills that are strong in preventing interpersonal abuse and all male violence against women and girls? Start where the core of the problem is, PP, if you really want to make a difference.
I am somewhat remiss in not being aware of the subtle yet the very note worthy record of voting for each of the parties.
The individual rites for all women is paramount certainly in this context...Canada...not withstanding (ok a pun not disrespect to your essay) those equally important in the USA.
I also extent a warm welcome to your return to Canada. Please continue to be a voice & advocate for informing women about important health issues & continuing to educate myself and other men.

My dear Canadians, please don’t let what’s happening in the US happen to you. Please get out and vote💙

Thanks so much for the information. You do such a good job keeping us informed 💃😊
Yikes! When Roe was overturned I heard a Canadian say how Canada didn't have that problem...
And we haven't. Hope we keep it that way.
'effing terrifying!
I also compliment your detailed explanation.
