Great article! I was wondering if you could review the brand quim and product happy clam?

I have heard that only one type of combination birth control has been approved as an acne treatment, I believe it is Yas? But you wrote that any combination pill will work. Is Yas more effective than other brands? I was hoping that taking Sprintec would improve my skin, but it hasn’t made much of a difference.

Obviously I could be wrong about the causes, but I think the oil production on my face really ramped up when I was on the depo shot. I didn’t have a lot of skin concerns before. But it hasn’t really gone away and I’m frustrated by the whole thing.

The approval just means that company submitted the data for approval so they could market it. Studies show all the estrogen containing pills are equally effective. The claims behind Yaz are theoretic and they have never done a head to head study. There are other good therapies besides the pill, and so that may be something to explore. It can also take several months for the pill to really have an effect.

thank you for the detailed explanation.

I'm curious if this same mechanism explains why I started getting acne (not a lot, but enough to notice) after I discontinued HRT (estrogen patch & progesterone). I assumed it was related, but it's good to get some confirmation. thanks!

Yes, the same mechanism. But also possibly other factors (change in bacterial colonization with age, etc).
